The soup recipe that I have for you as part of this article is Curried Sweet Potato, the sweet potato can be swapped to pumpkin if you prefer that instead. Currently we are right in the middle of winter here in Melbourne, and not only that, we are also in our second COVID-19 lock-down with severe Stage 3 Restrictions. This means once again we must stay at home and find things to do, and what better way to do that than cooking a nice warm soup to warm homemade soup to warm you up!  Before we get to the recipe for this delicious soup, what exactly are the health benefits of soup.

Boost Your Immunity:

Eating soup regularly can boost your immunity, and depending on what ingredients are used can help with inflammation as well, and right now who doesn’t want a strong immune system?

Cold & Flu:

Do you remember when you were a child your mum making you a bowl of chicken soup when you were fighting a cold or flu? As we just mentioned, depending on which ingredients are used, a nourishing bowl of soup can help fight off a cold or flu.  Research has shown that a bowl of chicken soup can help clear up nasal congestion. The broth liquid from the soup can help us to stay hydrated and the protein from the chicken provides our body with nutrients and amino acids to bolster our immune system.

Increase Vegetable Intake:

Soup is an easy way to increase your vegetable intake.  Most people are looking for ways to increase their vegetable intake as it is a fantastic way to add much needed vitamins and minerals to our body. Vegetables contain an array of antioxidants and other disease-fighting compounds that are very difficult to get anywhere else so it makes good sense to get many different varieties into your diet.

Digestion:

By including vegetables, beans. or lentils will ensure that your soup is high in fibre which will aid your digestion.  In one of our recent articles about lung capacity we showed how a study involving nearly 2,000 adults revealed low fibre intake was associated with reduced measures of lung function while a diet rich in fibre-containing foods may play a role in improving lung health. Another great reason to eat more soup.

Keep You Full:

A nourishing bowl of soup will keep you satiated for longer, especially if you add some protein to your soup.

Budget Friendly & Freeze Well:

By buying vegetables that are in season, soups are an inexpensive way to feed the family and by doubling a recipe you will have plenty of serves to put in your freezer for a future meal.
